The Lamorna Arts Festival
2011
30th September - 3rd October
30th September - 3rd October
Our Festival this year is sponsored by and showcases the work of Lamorna Valley Group - an active association of professional and semi-professional artists and craftspeople living or working in the Lamorna valley. Although our work covers a wide range of disciplines, from painting, ceramics and sculpture to stone carving and toy making, we come together as a group to celebrate our role in continuing the long tradition of creative activity in Lamorna. The main events this year are Streamline - an exhibition of members work in Lamorna Village Hall, and Open Studios - an opportunity to visit the artists themselves in the places where their work is created. Other events and attractions during the festival are shown below. An autumn day in Lamorna, with its wooded valley and tumbling stream, can be a magical experience - why not come and share it with us?
STREAMLINE EXHIBITION
The Lamorna stream has been an integral part of the working life of the valley for centuries since the first tin streamers extracted the precious mineral here and its flowing waters provided power for the mediaeval flour mills. S.J. Lamorna Birch, the founder of the original Lamorna Art Colony in the last century, was a keen fly
fisherman who was first attracted to stay here when he spotted trout in its clear waters - he stayed for half a century and attracted many others to follow him. Artists of our own generation find the stream and the quiet cove into which it flows an endless source of creative inspiration and a tranquil place in which to work. So this year weve taken the Lamorna stream as the theme for our exhibition. You can expect to see some varied and exciting, if occasionally somewhat tenuous, creative interpretations of this theme!OPEN STUDIOS
We have 23 artists taking part this year with the venues being clearly shown on the special Festival Map. Dotted all along the valley, from its upper reaches at Trewoof Wartha down to the cove itself, many are set in attractive gardens with lovely views, and
all of them will give you a warm welcome. Every artist will donate 10% of their sales to our chosen good cause, which this year is going towards Lamorna Village Hall. Please check the individual opening times before your visit. PINTS & POETRY
An informal and very popular evening in the famous Lamorna Wink pub - come along, relax over a drink and listen, or pluck up the courage to recite a piece yourself. Humorous, romantic, classic, kitchen sink or just plain doggerel - we dont mind - its the craic that counts! Laid back gipsy jazz style music by Joe Hemming and Friends.
OPEN GARDENS
Lamorna boasts some of the most beautiful private gardens in Cornwall. Weather dependent, but we hope to have at least two of the most well known open to make your visit even more enjoyable.
ART RAFFLE
So popular last year that were doing it again this year! Lamorna Valley Group artists each donate a piece on 8 square canvas which are then raffled. The draw takes place at the end of the Festival - you might be the lucky winner of a modern masterpiece! All proceeds go to the Lamorna Village Hall.
